ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION
This module introduces the principles and practices of construction technology for long-span and tall buildings. It focuses on the construction systems of basement, building façade and envelope systems as well as steel construction. It also covers the new and recent construction technologies and systems including modular construction (MC) and Industrialised Building System (IBS).
PROJECT 1 - – Industrialised Building System
This is a group assignment which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS). Before embarking on this project we were exposed to different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of IBS scoring in the classroom. First, we were required to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS components, and then construct a physical sectional model of the building to show the IBS components in detail.
I feel that this project gave us an introduction on various types of building materials commonly being used in building construction together with their properties and applications. This online research made me explored and understood better on the reasoning of the choice of materials used on buildings together with their characters, properties and the influence on the building design in general.
PROJECT 2 - Construction Solutions
This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project ( SEM 4 ) and aims to facilitate in the technical studies and development of our design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of our design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were unbuildable. This assignment was designed with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase our technical competency.
Task 1: Alternative Design Schemes
We were to conduct some precedent studies of recent, complex or unique construction systems that could be applied in the design. They should include the following:
A) The roof system
B) 2 facade systems
C) The structural system including the floor system
Then, using the similar systems as the ones in the case studies, we were to produce 2 alternatives of façade design schemes for the current studio design project. Each scheme should include only the front and the rear façades.
Task 2 on the other hand is intended to facilitate students to develop practical construction solutions and detailing for our own design through the production of sectional perspective drawings of spaces. We were required to produce detail sectional perspective drawing of 2 interesting spaces in our design; which consists of a space on the ground floor and a space on the top floor.
Throughout this module, I am able to analyse and document construction methods and materials , evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project, critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing and also generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.
