ENERGY & ARCHITECTURE
The module emphasizes the role of energy efficiency in low energy building in architectural design through an analysis and evaluation of a selected low energy building (Residential/Institutional/Commercial/Office/Hospitality). It is vital to be aware of the differences of the implementation of energy efficient strategies when discussing low-energy buildings or energy-efficient buildings. To consider the implementation as holistic components of architectural design, which may be critically assessed with theories followed by performance in practical. Specific topics of energy efficient strategies to be addressed and identified namely façade, building system, management, and how these affect the performance of the building. The module equips students with knowledge of building science and skills in the use of effective technology in energy and building design as a whole.
Project 1 : Low Energy building Analysis
In groups of 2, we were to select a precedent study of Low Energy Building/Net Zero (Residential/Hospitality/Institution/Office/Commercial) of their choice from an existing building locally or internationally.
a) Discuss the impact of the energy efficient strategies implemented to the built environment on the global scene and understand how these strategies affect the energy demands in the chosen building.
b) List the potential inventory of its energy efficient strategies on (Façade, Lighting System, HVAC System, Waste Management, Renewable Energy used, Waste Management) and choose ONE only for the development of the content.
c) The inventory list can be described or illustrated with the combination of graphs, text, images, infographics, sketches etc.
d) Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) feedback can be extracted to support the content.
PROJECT 2 - Sustainable City Ideas
The future of our cities will ultimately depend on the way we choose to shape our cities today. Their fate will be about how we as citizens live our lives, show respect towards all life on Earth and contribute to solutions that create a better world. They include a host of solutions from engaging in urban experiments and asking local authorities to enhance sustainability action to urban gardening and switching to bicycles. Each of those choices matters and together they make a large impact if each of us embraces responsibility for the cities we inhabit.
In this assignment, student will be conversant and expected to illustrate and transform concepts and ideas of the future sustainable city, the word sustainability has come into such common usage that it sometimes seems ubiquitous.
We were required to use any framework/concepts to our proposal with any consideration to the followings:
1. Economic Sustainability : Growth Development Productivity
2. Social Sustainability : Equity Empowerment Accessibility Participation Sharing Cultural Identity Institutional Stability
3. Environmental Sustainability : Eco-System Integrity Carrying Capacity Biodiversity
4. Ecomasterplanning framework (Red, Blue, Green, Grey Infrastructures)
Highlighting selected issues in year 2030, 2040 or 2050 in cities and give proposal to solve the issue.
Throughout his module, I am able to describe the impact of the built environment on the global scene and understand energy demands in buildings. After identifying the principles of energy efficient systems in architecture and building technology, I learnt how to communicate several points in a narrated presentation through diagrams, images and information with clear references in a video format in project 1. It was a challenging project for me as this was the first time I encountered video editing. One semester into 2 projects, working hard for progress every week with my tutor, and finally I could identify the principles of energy efficient systems in architecture and building technology, and also apply strategies of renewable energy to deliver a low energy architectural design.
