ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II

This module introduced the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigated the relationship between user and natural environment. In this studio, we went through a series of studio-based exercises; firstly, an investigation of the architectural spaces and construction through precedent studies; and secondly, an exploration of form and space through architectural conceptualisation; and finally designing a small freestanding structure that meets the user's requirements with the site context.

DIAGRAMMING ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES

PROJECT 1

We were required to investigate how architecture and spaces were created from establishing design intentions and the making of architectural elements: architectonics. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea was in-cooperated into this assignment.

DESIGNING WITH ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES & MATERIALITY

PROJECT 2

This assignment taught us further architectural principles and the effects that timber has on the crafting of architectural spaces. We explored more on the possible spatial qualities through an understanding of the tactile and tectonics aspects of timber structure for a space to self-contemplate.

PROJECT 3

TROPICAL SOLITARY HAVEN

I deconstructed my structure and created a space for me and my partner, interpreted and analyzed each users’ characters and needs in relation to the design of a small (timber) structure. We are to design a simple building type that respects the site context and balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design values.
