Project 2 - Designing with Architectural Principles & Materiality

The global pandemic has disrupted almost all human habits and engagements for the past months. Thrown into a new and complex situation, we have seen how COVID-19 pushed countries into lockdowns thereby driving social institutions to deal with the emerging phenomenon. Given this flux-ridden time, the situation has afforded many existential queries. Inspired by the possibly thresh out insights that can be derived from reflective and rethinking dispositions about our own selves, this project brought an architectural approach to where we are right now that could challenge certain ways or postures by framing ourselves, our relationship with nature, and others.

In this project, we were required to use the architectural principles from our first assignment to explore the conceptual and operational procedures in order to produce a significant gesture of architectural spaces. We explored the potential meanings and implications of this architectural principles in the sense that it will inform two areas which are generating forms and crafting spaces. In a group of 2, our main task was to generate and craft an Introspective Architectural Folly that has spatial experience, with a maximum volume of 125 m3 .

Design Intention

Dialogue of DisturbanceAdapting to chaos and unpredictability.

This introspective Architectural Folly aims to re-establish the seemingly broken symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. What that was supposed to be commensalism (both parties benefit together) has become parasitic (only one party benefits). In light of the recent pandemic, we have seen the rapid self-restoration and regenerative properties of nature where, without human disturbance, the environment, flora and fauna have been thriving and restoring itself from the effects of human activity. With this, this folly would like to express nature awareness in the form of three spaces: Apathy, Discovery, Awareness.

Carved out of timber and glass, this folly explores the principles of materiality in Juxtaposition, Connectivity, Unit to Whole, and Russian Doll Effect. Moving through the spaces, the user discovers his apathetic nature ( enclosed ), rethinks his own principles through discovery ( semi enclosed ), and comes to a realization and a place of awe in nature ( open ).

Through this project, I've learned how to produce design possibilities through the use of architectonics in a simple architectural form, space and function. I was also able to establish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design. I managed to design a simple structure through the use of architectonics and demonstrate a basic level of understanding of materiality.
