ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III

The module emphasizes on ‘experiencing space and place’ in architecture. We were introduced to, firstly, an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture; and secondly, the concept of neighbourhood and community. In our preliminary design work, we were engaged with studies and design of different spatial typologies for a simple dwelling space which explores the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. Subsequently, the major project involves the design of a small scale community building in the open landscape/suburban condition which engages with the spirit of place inherent within the site, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional and responsive to its site. At the same time, design exercise relates to spaces with values and culture, while emphasizing the role of the society in the architectural design process.

EXPERIENCING SPACE
'SPATIAL TRANSLATION'

PROJECT 1

In a group of 4, we identified and understood different modifying elements of architecture through precedent studies. Then, we interpreted and extract the ‘essence’ of the given narrative and translated the interpretation into a flow of spatial experiences, with the use of modifying elements selected.

EXPERIENCING PLACE 'GENUIS LOCI'

PROJECT 2

We are to document, interpret and analyze the physical conditions of the site and 'genius loci’ of place and generate design based on the character and conditions of the site context.

PROJECT 3

A MEMORY REPOSITORY

The purpose is to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the history & memory of Kampung Machap Baru, and also to provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.
