Project 1a - PRECEDENT STUDIES : Analysing spatial poetics in architecture

The crafting of "Spatial Experiences" is a key consideration for architects in architectural design. The study and exploration of different spatial qualities are important in design because it informs human occupation, behaviour, and experience within architectural spaces. The focus of Project 1 is "Experiencing Space". We are required to explore issues of spatial poetics through simple design exercises. Working in groups of 4 students, we are to propose a scheme of Spatial Translation. we are required to design the scheme in the form of semi-open architecture by using 2-3 Modifying Elements of Architecture. The spaces in our scheme are translated from a given narrative to be interpreted by us and informed by precedent studies.

With reference to the reader extracted from Simon Unwin’s “Analysing Architecture", are required to select 2 to 3 modifying elements of architecture. Therefore, we selected sound, time and texture. The objective is to identify, understand and analyse different modifying elements of architecture through precedent studies in order to create spatial poetics and experiences.

Project 1b - SPATIAL TRANSLATION : Applying spatial poetics in architecture

Learning from the Precedent Studies in Project 1a and interpreting the given narrative, we designed a scheme of spatial translation. The scheme was approximately 1,000m3 in volume and it employed the selected modifying elements of architecture from Project 1a.

Throughout this project, I've learn how to identify and explain different modifying elements in architecture, and their spatial use and experience. I am able to create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space, thus generate design through conscious consideration of spatial typologies, section-plan relationship, contextual conditions and considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures.
