Project 1 - MODELS AND TATTOOS

The tools and devices used in the process of architectural design can be defined as either design elements or design principles. Design elements are those which can be defined as specific "parts" of a design solution. Design principles are those items which influence, direct or resolve the overall composition of the design elements.

The learning objectives of this project were for us to be able to explore varied forms of design principles in communication and expression of self and its sense + to enhance our ability in designing 3D design and translate it into diagrams.

We were required to produce 6 monochromatic models 100mm x 100mm x 100mm (with a +-5mm base) & 6 monochromatic tattoo stamps on 100mm x 100mm sized cartridge paper to be mounted on an A2 black colored mounting board and properly labeled.

SPACE + GROUPING

The part below is a continuous area which is unoccupied, creating a space between itself and the triangles. Out of all shapes, i chose the triangle and grouped them to create negative spaces in between.

MATERIALS + UNITY

I used different materials for this model and they appear connected and aligned to a common block in the horizontal direction. The form and repeating shape are to maintain visual consistency.

SHAPE + CONTRAST

In this model, I used geometric figures. Contrast was shown by the obvious different between the solid and non-solid rectangles . The triangles are created using 2D shapes, and this is how I used the 2 elements in this model.

TEXTURE + RHYTHM

A combination of balance & repetition. I varied the height of the cylinders, giving it a pattern while having tactile textures arranged around the centre point at the same time.

MASS + SCALE

I had masses of different sizes / height stacked together and proportioned them in such a way so that the relationship between both elements are harmonized.

LINE + EMPHASIS

I broke the pattern with a thicker line in a different direction, it stood out and created an emphasis on the model. The human eye will automatically catch it therefore special attention / stress were given to it.
