Project 1C: Architecture for place-making
Aim: to develop an architectural narration for place making in the city and to perform an integrated design.
Architectural strategy should be resolved for form, activity and circulation, through technical integration. They will have to develop architecture FORM, SPACE and FACADES for
▪ Positive outdoor space (site layout)
▪ Animating the edge (Façade design)
▪ Building size and scale (sections)
▪ Building for change (space planning/function)
▪ A thriving public realm (connection to the street) Architectural design strategy should be further resolved a) by design through form, activity and circulation and b) for technical and services integration through concepts and components. The proposed building should be of an area of minimum 1200 m2 and a maximum of 1300 m2 and 3- 5 storeys high in the given block boundaries. Apart from developing a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the relevant questions pertaining to community and its context, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, technical, environmental, services, and legislative requirements to address the user needs for an urban Community Centre. This will include a focus on tropical design, lighting as well as the design of the façade and building envelope that is of a coherent language to the overall design scheme. The design outcome has to exhibit strong integration in construction and theory, within the Studio, whilst concurrently integrating with the Module on Building Services through concepts and components
About a Community Centre for the Creative City [CCCC] The needs of the community should be responded to by design by exploring various possibilities of relevant sub-questions that suit your interest and exploration from Project 1a. For the rest of the semester, you will concentrate on designing a Community Centre for the Creative City within an urban block corner site in KL City Centre. The design of the building consists of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioral patterns as discerned and analyzed in the Preliminary Studies. The final project has two distinctive stages: a) Architectural Strategy and b) Design Development and detailing. It should also be noted that the new/proposed facade should be carefully designed to retain the architectural character of the historic town.
Urban situations – challenges due to the pandemic onto the vulnerable communities: The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown an extreme set of challenges to almost everyone, including the notion of the creative city. The Government has a mission to aid a sustainable recovery path for the creative sector. The question now, according to them, is how we equip ourselves to face this kind of challenge because it seems that the uncertainties will always be there. The UNESCO believes in revival through digitalization as one of the main ways forward. The ADV takes it from both these local and global perspectives, and the conviction is that revival through needful programs such as sharing, collaboration, and digitalization. Sensitive and sensible to the current issues will make a place where human experience and support for a revival become the focus. A place to support all for being skillful and everyday life that is challenged not only the current covid-19 outbreak but also any unexpected future pandemics. Please refer to Appendix I to refer to the schedule of areas.

After this project, I'm able to identify and analyse environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site and apply ideas of environmental sustainability. I could design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences.Lastly, i feel proud producing drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.
I would like to thank my tutor, Mr Nazmi who made it to the end of the subject with us. We had amazing lectures and discussions throughout the semester and I benefited a lot through each tutorial and lecture.
